Mo Ganji’s single line describes the Philippine crocodile — a freshwater crocodilian adapted to rivers, marshes and small lakes — by allowing its essential core to surface without emphasis on menace, antiquity or dominance. The continuous line condenses the being to a quiet coherence, enough to register presence while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “crocodile.” In this narrowing of form, what appears is continuity rather than threat.

Crocodylus mindorensis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the Philippines, the species once occurred widely across several islands but is now restricted to a few fragmented freshwater systems, primarily on Luzon and Mindanao. The total wild population is believed to number well under 100 mature individuals.

The principal threats include habitat loss and degradation, entanglement in fishing gear, deliberate killing due to fear or conflict, and historical overexploitation. Because the species favors small, inland freshwater habitats close to human settlements, it is particularly exposed to disturbance. Conservation initiatives combining habitat protection, captive breeding and community-based coexistence have slowed decline, but recovery remains fragile.
