In a single, continuous line, Mo Ganji depicts the Andean mountain cat — a rare, almost spectral presence of the high Andes. His reduction to one unbroken stroke reflects the essence of an animal seldom seen, moving quietly across rocky slopes above 3,500 meters.
Leopardus jacobita is classified as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. It inhabits remote regions of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru, where fewer than 1,500 mature individuals are believed to remain. Its survival is threatened by habitat degradation, mining activity, hunting of prey species such as the mountain viscacha, and occasional direct persecution. Fragmented populations and the vast, rugged terrain complicate conservation efforts, making each remaining individual significant.
Ganji’s single-line rendering captures this tension: a species defined by scarcity, shaped by extreme landscapes, and dependent on delicate ecological balance. The quiet clarity of the line invites viewers to see the Andean mountain cat not just as a hidden predator, but as a reminder of how easily unique lives can fade when the margin for existence becomes too thin.
