Dama dama mesopotamica is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Once widespread across the Middle East, the subspecies experienced severe declines due to overhunting and habitat loss. By the mid-20th century it was feared extinct in the wild, before a small remnant population was rediscovered in southwestern Iran. Today, survival depends on a handful of fragmented wild groups and carefully managed reintroduction programs in Iran and Israel.

The principal threats include habitat degradation, limited genetic diversity, human disturbance, and the vulnerability inherent in very small populations. Although conservation efforts have prevented extinction, long-term viability remains uncertain, requiring sustained protection of habitat corridors and careful population management.
