Arapawa Goat | Arapawa Ziege | Capra hircus
Rather than tracing the animal itself, Mo Ganji’s single line offers a conceptual gesture toward the Arapawa goat — a rare feral lineage found on Arapawa Island, New Zealand. In Ganjis art, the line stands less as a depiction and more as a reminder of how forms, beings and histories can be reduced to the essence. Ganji’s approach highlights how meaning lies not in detail but in the relationships we draw between the visible and the implied.
The Arapawa goat is not a wild species but a distinct, centuries-old feral population derived from domestic goats (Capra hircus), likely introduced in the early 19th century. Because it is not a wild taxon, it is not evaluated on the IUCN Red List. Instead, its status is considered in terms of breed conservation. Within New Zealand, the Arapawa goat is regarded as critically rare, with only a few hundred animals remaining. Early conservation efforts began when habitat restoration projects on Arapawa Island threatened to eliminate the population entirely; a small number of animals were relocated and became the nucleus for ongoing preservation.
Threats to the Arapawa goat include limited genetic diversity, small population size, and habitat management policies that historically regarded the goats as invasive. Today, conservation groups aim to maintain the lineage as a culturally and historically significant genetic resource, representing one of the oldest surviving feral goat populations in the Pacific.
Ganji’s reduced line acknowledges this complex identity — neither fully wild nor domestic, neither wholly protected nor unwanted. The drawing becomes a quiet notation of a lineage that survived by accident and persistence, reminding us that rarity can emerge in unexpected places, and that even familiar species can carry fragile, irreplaceable histories.
