Arctic Fox | Polarfuchs | Vulpes lagopus

This time, Mo Ganji’s single line approaches the Arctic fox not through reduction of form alone, but through the idea of adaptation. The uninterrupted stroke suggests a being shaped by extremes. In keeping with Ganji’s philosophy, the line remains open: it does not claim to define the fox, only to mark one possible interpretation of an animal whose appearance is itself a changing concept.

Vulpes lagopus is widespread across the Arctic regions of North America, Europe and Asia. The species as a whole is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, owing to its broad distribution and generally stable global population. However, some regional populations — notably in Fennoscandia — are critically endangered due to historical overhunting, low prey availability, disease, competition from expanding red fox populations, and climate-driven changes in snow cover that reduce suitable denning conditions.

The Arctic fox is exceptionally well adapted to its environment: dense fur, compact body shape and remarkable temperature tolerance allow it to survive some of the coldest climates on Earth. Its fortunes often rise and fall with the cycles of lemmings, its primary prey in many regions; when these populations crash, fox numbers can decline sharply.

Ganji’s minimal line does not attempt to capture this complexity in detail. Instead, it offers a quiet reminder that even resilient species depend on delicate ecological balances. The drawing becomes an understated note of coexistence between concepts and realities — just as the Arctic fox itself occupies both the physical landscape of the far north and the shifting conceptual terrain of change and survival.
