Mo Ganji’s single line engages the Partula tohiveana — a small arboreal land snail once inhabiting the humid forest vegetation of Tahiti — by allowing its essential core to surface without emphasis on delicacy, slowness or scale. The continuous line gathers a minimal presence, enough to suggest a being while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “snail.” In this concentration on the essential, form appears before visibility or familiarity can settle.

Partula tohiveana is listed as Extinct in the Wild (EW) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to Tahiti, the species was once part of a diverse radiation of tree snails across the Society Islands. Its disappearance from the wild followed the introduction of the predatory rosy wolf snail (Euglandina rosea), which was released in an attempt to control invasive snails but instead devastated native Partula populations.

The principal drivers of decline include predation by introduced species, habitat loss, and the inherent vulnerability of island endemics with extremely restricted ranges. Today, Partula tohiveana survives only in captive breeding programs, where it persists outside the ecological context that once shaped its existence. Reintroduction efforts face significant challenges due to the continued presence of invasive predators.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which this vanished-in-the-wild being can be encountered without urgency or spectacle. It allows attention to rest on a life reduced to memory and managed survival, suggesting how easily entire evolutionary histories can be erased through well-intentioned intervention — and how absence often becomes visible only after continuity has already been broken.
