Mo Ganji turns toward the Philippine eagle — a large forest raptor dependent on intact lowland and montane rainforests — by letting its inner coherence surface without emphasis on dominance, wingspan or iconography. The continuous line concentrates the being to an essential presence, enough to register life while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “eagle.” In this paring back, form appears before power or symbolism claims authority.

Pithecophaga jefferyi is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the Philippines, the species is restricted mainly to the islands of Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao. Population estimates suggest only a few hundred breeding pairs remain, fragmented across diminishing forest landscapes.

The principal threats include large-scale deforestation, habitat fragmentation, hunting, and human disturbance near nesting sites. Because the Philippine eagle requires extensive territories and relies on mature forest structure, even partial habitat loss can render areas unsuitable. Low reproductive rates further limit the species’ capacity to recover once populations decline.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the eagle can be encountered beyond emblematic status or national symbol. It allows attention to settle on a life bound to vertical forest depth and continuity, suggesting how the disappearance of forests does not merely remove shelter — it collapses entire dimensions in which such beings are able to exist at all.
