Mo Ganji’s single line attends to the Kihansi spray toad — a minute amphibian once confined to the constant mist of a single waterfall system — by letting its core presence surface without reliance on scale or rarity. The continuous line gathers a fragile kernel of being, enough to suggest life while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “toad.” In this exposure of the essential, the being appears before place, function or exception defines it.

Nectophrynoides asperginis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List and is considered extinct in the wild. Endemic to the Kihansi Gorge in Tanzania, the species depended entirely on the fine spray created by the Kihansi Falls. The construction of a hydroelectric dam in the early 2000s altered water flow and eliminated the microhabitat on which the toad relied.

The principal drivers of decline included habitat collapse due to altered hydrology, compounded by the spread of chytrid fungal disease. Despite emergency conservation actions, the wild population disappeared within a few years. Today, the species survives only through captive breeding programs, with reintroduction efforts dependent on the restoration of artificial spray systems.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which this almost-vanished being can be encountered beyond tragedy or scientific record. It invites attention to a presence shaped by extreme specificity, quietly reminding us that human interventions can erase entire worlds without noticing — and that recognizing ourselves as part of the same delicate ecological fabric is essential if such disappearances are not to be repeated.
