Indian Elephant | Indischer Elefant | Elephas maximus indicus
Mo Ganji’s single line attends to the Indian elephant — a large, highly social terrestrial mammal shaped by memory, movement and long migratory routes — through a gesture of concentrated reduction. The continuous line offers a restrained contour, enough to suggest a presence while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “elephant.” By setting aside descriptive excess, the drawing allows essence to surface before scale or symbolism takes hold.
Elephas maximus indicus is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Distributed across fragmented habitats in South and Southeast Asia, the subspecies depends on extensive forest and grassland landscapes connected by traditional migration corridors. Over recent decades, populations have declined as these landscapes have been increasingly transformed.
The principal threats include habitat loss and fragmentation, human–elephant conflict, infrastructure development that blocks movement routes, and poaching, particularly for ivory. As elephants are slow to reproduce and require large, connected territories, disruptions to migration patterns have long-lasting effects on population stability and social structure.
Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the elephant can be encountered beyond size, power or cultural symbolism. It invites attention to a presence shaped by continuity and collective memory, quietly reminding us that human claims of dominance over land and movement often fracture the living systems they depend upon — and that recognizing ourselves as part of those systems is essential to allowing such long-lived beings to persist.
