Mo Ganji turns toward the Vietnamese crested argus — a large, ground-dwelling pheasant inhabiting dense evergreen forests — by letting the single line move toward inner essence rather than display or ornament. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside plumage, courtship and spectacle so that presence can surface without explanation. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the bird alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Rheinardia ocellata is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Native to montane forests of Vietnam and Laos, the species occurs at low densities and is naturally elusive. Its populations are believed to be declining, though precise numbers are difficult to determine due to the bird’s secretive behavior and inaccessible habitat.

The principal threats include habitat loss from logging, agricultural expansion, infrastructure development, and hunting. Because the Vietnamese crested argus depends on intact forest undergrowth and large, undisturbed territories, fragmentation has a disproportionate impact on survival and breeding success. Human encroachment further increases pressure on remaining populations.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the argus can be encountered beyond splendor or ritual.
