Mo Ganji turns toward the tree kangaroo — an arboreal marsupial adapted to tropical montane and lowland rainforests — by letting the single line move toward inner essence rather than adaptation or surprise. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside climbing ability, posture and evolutionary exception so that presence can surface without explanation. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the animal alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Dendrolagus sp. cannot be assigned a single conservation status on the IUCN Red List, as the genus comprises multiple species with differing assessments. Several species, including the Matschie’s tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus matschiei) and the Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus goodfellowi), are listed as Endangered (EN) or Critically Endangered (CR). Across New Guinea and northeastern Australia, most tree kangaroo species face declining populations.

The principal threats include habitat loss from logging, agricultural expansion and mining, as well as hunting for meat. Because tree kangaroos rely on continuous forest canopy and have low reproductive rates, population recovery is slow once habitats are fragmented. Increasing access to previously remote forests has intensified pressure in recent decades.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the tree kangaroo can be encountered beyond novelty or contradiction. It allows the being to be perceived as a life shaped by vertical continuity, suggesting how existence adapted to layered forest worlds becomes fragile when those layers are reduced to isolated remnants that no longer connect ground to canopy.
