Mo Ganji draws near to the Siberian tiger — a large forest-dwelling big cat of the boreal and temperate forests of the Russian Far East — by letting the single line move toward the animal’s core rather than power or majesty. The line condenses presence through reduction, setting aside scale, force and symbolism so that what remains is a concentrated sense of being. In Ganji’s thinking, the line does not belong to the tiger alone; it stays open, reminding us that every figure is also a provisional human concept.

Panthera tigris altaica is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Once ranging widely across Northeast Asia, the subspecies suffered severe declines due to hunting and habitat loss during the 20th century. Conservation measures have stabilized populations in parts of Russia, with smaller numbers occurring in northeastern China, yet total population size remains limited and vulnerable.

The principal threats include habitat fragmentation from logging and infrastructure, poaching of both tigers and their prey species, and human–wildlife conflict. Because Siberian tigers require vast, contiguous territories with sufficient prey, even incremental landscape disruption can undermine long-term survival.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the tiger can be encountered beyond dominance or myth. It allows attention to rest on a life shaped by range and restraint, suggesting how even apex beings depend on continuity — and how the loss of space quietly precedes the loss of presence itself.
