Mo Ganji brings the San José brush rabbit — a small, ground-dwelling mammal restricted to dense shrubland — into focus by letting the single line move toward essence rather than visibility or behavior. The line condenses the being into a restrained presence, setting aside alertness, speed and form so that what remains is a quiet core. In Ganji’s sense, the line does not claim the rabbit alone; it stays open, reminding us that every figure is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Sylvilagus mansuetus is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to San José Island in the Gulf of California, the species occupies a very limited range within arid scrub and brush habitats. Its entire global population is confined to this single island, making it exceptionally vulnerable to disturbance.

The principal threats include habitat degradation from grazing by introduced animals, invasive plant species, and environmental change affecting vegetation structure. Because the San José brush rabbit depends on dense cover for shelter and breeding, even modest alterations to shrubland can undermine survival. Its isolation offers no opportunity for recolonization once local loss occurs.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the rabbit can be encountered beyond timidity or scale.
