Obey Crayfish | Obey-Flusskrebs | Cambarus obeyensis

Mo Ganji’s single line engages the Obey crayfish — a small freshwater crustacean inhabiting clear, spring-fed streams — by allowing its essential core to surface without emphasis on form, armor or function. The continuous line gathers a condensed presence, enough to suggest life while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “crayfish.” In this quiet distillation, the being appears before habitat specificity or biological role defines it.

Cambarus obeyensis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the Obey River system in Tennessee, United States, the species occupies a highly restricted range limited to a small network of clean, well-oxygenated streams. Its entire global population is confined to this single watershed.

The principal threats include water pollution, sedimentation, alteration of stream flow, and habitat degradation resulting from agriculture, development and road construction. Because the species depends on stable water quality and intact stream substrates, even minor environmental changes can have immediate and severe impacts. Its extremely limited distribution leaves no buffer against disturbance.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the crayfish can be encountered beyond ecological obscurity or scale. It invites attention to a presence shaped by flow and confinement, quietly reminding us that human actions upstream often determine the fate of lives downstream. Recognizing ourselves as part of these freshwater systems is inseparable from allowing such fragile, localized beings to continue to exist.
