Laysan Duck | Laysanente | Anas laysanensis

Mo Ganji’s single line attends to the Laysan duck — a small, ground-nesting waterfowl adapted to isolated island wetlands — by allowing its essential coherence to come forward without emphasis on rarity or endemism. The continuous line holds a compact core of presence, enough to suggest a living being while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “duck.” In this quiet distillation, form appears before geography or vulnerability defines it.

Anas laysanensis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, the species was historically confined to Laysan Island, where its entire global population survived within a single, fragile ecosystem. In recent years, carefully managed translocations have established additional populations on other islands, reducing — but not eliminating — extinction risk.

The principal threats include habitat degradation, extreme weather events linked to climate change, invasive species, disease, and the inherent vulnerability of very small, isolated populations. Sea-level rise and storm surges pose particular dangers to low-lying island habitats, while limited genetic diversity constrains long-term resilience despite conservation successes.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the duck can be encountered beyond isolation or recovery narratives. It invites attention to a presence shaped by confinement and continuity, quietly reminding us that survival on the margins often depends on conditions humans rarely notice — and that recognizing ourselves as part of those same systems is inseparable from allowing such narrowly held lives to persist.
