Kangaroo Island Emu | Känguru-Insel-Emu | Dromaius novaehollandiae baudinianus (Extinct)

Mo Ganji turns toward the Kangaroo Island emu — a small, flightless bird once endemic to Kangaroo Island off southern Australia — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than size, difference or extinction narrative. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside stature, speed and taxonomic distinction so that presence can surface without depiction. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the emu alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Dromaius novaehollandiae baudinianus is listed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List. This island subspecies of the emu disappeared shortly after European contact, with extinction occurring around 1827. Isolated from mainland populations, it had evolved smaller body size and a restricted range, traits that offered no protection once human pressure was introduced.

The principal causes of extinction included intensive hunting by settlers and sailors, habitat disturbance, and the vulnerability inherent in island endemism. With a limited population and no opportunity for recolonization, the Kangaroo Island emu was unable to withstand even brief exploitation. Its disappearance occurred within a single human generation.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the emu can be encountered beyond marginality or footnote. It allows the being to be perceived as a life shaped by isolation and continuity, suggesting how island worlds often hold distinct forms only as long as restraint remains intact — and how quickly uniqueness dissolves once contact replaces distance.
