Mo Ganji turns toward the Japanese sea lion — a large pinniped once inhabiting the coastal waters of the Sea of Japan and the western North Pacific — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than utility or historical narrative. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside body mass, movement and behavioral reading so that presence can surface without depiction. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the sea lion alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Zalophus japonicus is listed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List. The species once occurred along the coasts of Japan, Korea and parts of eastern Russia. It declined rapidly from the late 19th century onward and is believed to have disappeared by the mid-20th century, with the last credible sightings dating to the 1950s.

The principal causes of extinction included intensive commercial hunting for oil, meat and hides, competition with fisheries, habitat disturbance, and additional pressure during periods of war and industrial expansion. Because the Japanese sea lion bred in accessible coastal colonies, it was particularly vulnerable to sustained exploitation. As numbers fell, no effective protections were established in time to halt the decline.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the sea lion can be encountered beyond absence or historical footnote. It allows the being to be perceived as a former coastal presence shaped by proximity to humans, suggesting how extinction often arises where familiarity and access replace restraint — leaving behind a shoreline where continuity has been irreversibly broken.
