Hog Deer | Schweinshirsch | Axis porcinus

Mo Ganji’s single line reflects on the Hog deer — a compact, low-built deer adapted to tall grasslands and riverine floodplains — through a gesture of deliberate reduction. The continuous line offers a quiet contour, sufficient to signal a presence while remaining open to interpretations beyond the category of “deer.” By setting aside descriptive excess, the drawing allows essence to surface before habit and recognition take over.

Axis porcinus is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Native to South and Southeast Asia, the species once ranged widely across floodplains, grasslands and marshy landscapes. Today, its populations are highly fragmented, with strongholds remaining only in parts of India, Nepal and Cambodia, while many former populations have disappeared.

The principal threats include large-scale loss and degradation of grassland and wetland habitats, agricultural expansion, altered river dynamics, and hunting. Because hog deer depend on dense ground cover and seasonal flooding regimes, changes to land use and water management rapidly erode suitable habitat. Small, isolated populations face additional risks from reduced genetic diversity and limited recolonization potential.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the deer can be encountered beyond movement, timidity or form. It invites attention to a presence shaped by ground-level life and seasonal rhythms, quietly reminding us that landscapes we flatten or drain in the name of control are often those that sustain the most finely tuned lives — and that our own place within nature is inseparable from the fragile terrains we continue to transform.
