Beatragus hunteri is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the arid grasslands of northeastern Kenya and a small area of southern Somalia, the species has experienced dramatic declines over the past decades. Today, only a few hundred individuals are thought to survive, largely within a highly restricted and fragmented range.

The principal threats include habitat degradation from overgrazing and land-use change, prolonged droughts linked to climate variability, disease outbreaks, and increased predation pressure where natural systems are destabilized. Limited range, low population density, and restricted movement corridors further constrain recovery, making the species exceptionally vulnerable to environmental shocks.
