Giant Ibis | Riesenibis | Thaumatibis gigantea
Mo Ganji’s single line invites the Giant ibis — a tall, ground-foraging wading bird with a long decurved bill adapted to seasonal wetlands — into focus through a gesture of reduction. The continuous line offers a spare indication of form, enough to suggest a presence while remaining open to other readings. By letting detail recede, the drawing allows essence to surface before the being is secured by name or function.
Thaumatibis gigantea is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to parts of Cambodia and historically present in neighboring regions of Laos and Vietnam, the species depends on intact lowland wetlands, seasonal pools and forest edges. Its population is extremely small and highly localized, making it one of the rarest birds in the world.
The principal threats include habitat loss and degradation from agricultural expansion, drainage of wetlands, disturbance during breeding, and hunting. Changes to seasonal water regimes reduce access to feeding grounds, while increasing human presence fragments the remaining habitats the ibis relies upon. With such a limited population, recovery remains fragile and uncertain.
Ganji’s single line creates a space in which the ibis can be encountered beyond rarity or emblematic status. It offers a moment to attend to a presence shaped by rhythm, water and time, gently reminding us that human claims of separation from nature obscure how deeply our actions determine the conditions under which other lives may continue — or quietly disappear.
