Mo Ganji’s single line turns toward the Gharial — a river-dwelling crocodilian with an exceptionally long, narrow snout adapted for fish-eating — as a gesture of reduction that privileges presence over depiction. The continuous line offers a spare contour, enough to signal a living being while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “crocodile.” In this economy of form, essence emerges where excess description is set aside.

Gavialis gangeticus is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Once widespread across the major river systems of the Indian subcontinent, the species is now confined to a few fragmented stretches of rivers in India and Nepal. Its survival depends on large, undisturbed riverine habitats with clean water and suitable sandbanks for nesting.

The principal threats include river regulation through dams and barrages, sand mining that destroys nesting sites, entanglement in fishing gear, and declining fish populations. Altered flow regimes disrupt breeding cycles, while fragmentation prevents natural movement along river corridors. Despite targeted conservation programs, recovery remains slow and geographically limited.

Ganji’s single line creates a space in which the gharial can be encountered beyond danger or spectacle.
