Mo Ganji turns toward the domed Rodrigues giant tortoise — a large herbivorous reptile once endemic to the island of Rodrigues — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than mass, longevity or extinction narrative. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside shell, weight and time so that presence can surface without illustration. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the tortoise alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Cylindraspis peltastes is listed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List. The species was one of several giant tortoises inhabiting the Mascarene Islands and disappeared in the 18th century, shortly after human colonization. Like many island giants, it had evolved without predators and showed little defense against rapid environmental change.

The principal causes of extinction included intensive harvesting for food by sailors and settlers, destruction of native vegetation, and the introduction of invasive animals that degraded habitat and competed for resources. Slow reproduction and long generation times left the species unable to recover once exploitation began.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the tortoise can be encountered beyond slowness or inevitability. It allows the being to be perceived as a life shaped by duration and continuity, suggesting how extinction often arrives not through dramatic collapse, but through steady removal — until what once anchored a place in time is no longer there to return.
