Mo Ganji turns toward the dodo — a large, flightless bird once endemic to the island of Mauritius — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than caricature or historical cliché. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside clumsiness, novelty and symbolism so that presence can surface without narrative. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the bird alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept, shaped as much by projection as by reality.

Raphus cucullatus is listed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List. The dodo disappeared in the late 17th century, only decades after humans first settled Mauritius. Having evolved in isolation without terrestrial predators, the species showed little fear of humans and reproduced slowly, traits that proved fatal once new pressures arrived.

The principal causes of extinction included direct hunting, destruction of forest habitat, and the introduction of invasive species such as rats, pigs and monkeys, which preyed on eggs and nests. The rapid collapse of the dodo population exemplifies how island species with narrow ecological adaptations can be overwhelmed within a single human generation.
