In Mo Ganji’s rendering of the bonobo, the single line becomes a moment of quiet inquiry. Rather than describing an ape or emphasising familiar traits, the line invites the viewer to meet a presence before assigning it meaning. Through this pared-down gesture, the drawing shifts attention from classification to essence — revealing a being that can be sensed without relying on the conceptual frame of “bonobo.”
Pan paniscus is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the forests south of the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the species inhabits one of the last large expanses of equatorial rainforest. Despite this, bonobo populations remain small and fragmented, and many areas once occupied by them are now heavily disturbed or inaccessible due to conflict.
The primary threats include habitat loss through logging and agricultural expansion, hunting for bushmeat, and the destabilising effects of political insecurity, which often limit conservation efforts. Fragmentation of forest landscapes restricts movement and isolates groups, increasing their vulnerability to decline.
Ganji’s single line does not depict these pressures; instead, it offers space to acknowledge a presence that exists beyond its human-assigned category. By reducing form to a continuous, essential gesture, the drawing reminds us that what we call a “species” is a conceptual convenience — while the living being persists in its own integrity, grounded in relationships, landscapes and fragile continuities that ask for our attention.
The bonobo also serves as a quiet reminder that humans often forget their own place within the natural world — imagining themselves outside of it, or even above it, while in truth they remain inseparable from the life they judge and define.
