Ara glaucogularis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the Llanos de Moxos region of Bolivia, the species occupies palm-dominated savannas and gallery forests. Its wild population is extremely small, reduced to only a few dozen breeding pairs, and remains vulnerable despite ongoing conservation efforts.

The primary threats include habitat loss, historical trapping for the pet trade, and dependence on a limited number of palm species for nesting and feeding. Fragmented distribution and low reproductive rates further constrain recovery. Although dedicated programs have improved protection and community engagement, the species persists in a narrow ecological and geographic space.
