Panthera tigris tigris is the most numerous of the tiger subspecies, yet still faces significant risk. It is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Bengal tigers are found primarily in India, with smaller populations in Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Although some regions have seen encouraging increases due to intensive conservation, many populations remain isolated and vulnerable.

Major threats include habitat loss and fragmentation, human–wildlife conflict, depletion of prey species, and poaching for the illegal wildlife trade. Dense human populations across the tiger’s range intensify competition for space, while protected areas often exist as isolated pockets surrounded by development. Maintaining connected landscapes and adequate prey abundance is crucial for long-term survival.
