Houbaropsis bengalensis inhabits seasonally tall grasslands across parts of India, Nepal and Cambodia. It is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. The species has suffered severe declines due to widespread loss and fragmentation of grassland habitats, driven by agricultural expansion, development, and changes in land use that remove or degrade suitable breeding areas.

Remaining populations are small and highly fragmented. In South Asia, the bird depends on protected grasslands that are increasingly threatened by encroachment and shifting agricultural pressures. In Southeast Asia, rapid habitat conversion continues to reduce already critical numbers. Disturbance during the breeding season and hunting in some regions further contribute to its vulnerability.
