In Mo Ganji’s portrait of the Belalanda chameleon, a single, continuous line defines the essential structure of the animal’s head. The contour is reduced to its most characteristic angles — the curve of the casque, the forward-set eye, the slight tension of the jaw. By leaving detail aside, the line invites the viewer to recognise the species through its distilled presence, aligning with Ganji’s intention to reveal essence by subtraction.

Furcifer belalandaensis is a chameleon endemic to a very small region in southwest Madagascar, restricted to dry coastal habitats around Belalanda. It is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. The species’ range is extremely limited, and its habitat is under intense pressure from charcoal production, agricultural expansion, and degradation of native vegetation.

Because the entire known population occurs in a narrow and increasingly fragmented area, even small environmental changes or human activities can have disproportionate effects. The species is also vulnerable to local collection. Surveys have found the chameleon to be rare, and its continued survival depends on protecting the remaining dry forest and scrub habitats in the region.

Ganji’s single-line portrait does not attempt to show the chameleon’s full adaptive repertoire — its colour shifts, movement or behaviour — but instead offers a quiet acknowledgment of its existence. The reduction to essentials invites a clearer gaze: a reminder that some species are defined as much by their fragility as by their form.
