In this work, Mo Ganji uses a single, continuous line to distill the Asiatic Cheetah to its essential presence. Rather than illustrating speed or dramatic motion, the line searches for a quiet underlying form — a way of revealing the being by removing everything that is not strictly necessary. In keeping with Ganji’s philosophy, the drawing does not claim to define the animal completely; it proposes one conceptual pathway to its essence, carried by the simplicity of the stroke.

The Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Once distributed across the Arabian Peninsula, the Near East and into India, the subspecies now survives almost exclusively in Iran, in a few isolated desert and steppe regions. With fewer than 50 individuals remaining — and some recent estimates even lower — it represents one of the most threatened large cats in the world.

The decline is driven by habitat fragmentation, severe reduction of prey species, human encroachment, and road mortality. Low population numbers and limited gene flow further increase vulnerability. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection, prey recovery, traffic mitigation and monitoring, but the future of the subspecies remains uncertain.

Ganji’s minimal line does not attempt to address these pressures directly. Instead, it offers a moment of clarity — an invitation to see the cheetah’s essential form without distraction. The drawing leaves space for reflection: a reminder that reduction can reveal meaning, and that the essence of a living being can persist even as its reality becomes increasingly fragile.
