Western Black Rhinoceros | Westafrikanisches Spitzmaulnashorn | Ceratotherium simum (Extinct)
Mo Ganji turns toward the Western black rhinoceros — a large, browsing megaherbivore once inhabiting savannas and woodlands of West and Central Africa — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than mass, armor or symbolic weight. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside horn, hide and physical dominance so that presence can surface without depiction. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the rhinoceros alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.
Diceros bicornis longipes is listed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List. This subspecies of the black rhinoceros once ranged across countries such as Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria. After decades of severe decline, it was last confirmed alive in the early 2000s and was officially declared extinct in 2011.
The principal causes of extinction included intensive poaching driven by demand for rhino horn, habitat loss, political instability, and the collapse of effective protection. As populations dwindled, remaining individuals became increasingly isolated and vulnerable, while conservation responses came too late to counter organized hunting. The loss occurred despite global awareness of the broader rhino crisis.
Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the rhinoceros can be encountered beyond monumentality or warning symbol. It allows the being to be perceived as a life undone by attribution and extraction, suggesting how extinction can arrive not through ignorance of value, but through the relentless conversion of living presence into commodity — until no ground remains for return.
