Mo Ganji turns toward the waved albatross — a large pelagic seabird breeding almost exclusively on the Galápagos Islands — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than range or endurance. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside wingspan, oceanic distance and ritualized movement so that presence can surface without scale. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the bird alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Phoebastria irrorata is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. The species breeds primarily on Española Island in the Galápagos and forages widely along the Pacific coast of South America. Its global population is small and declining, with low reproductive rates amplifying vulnerability.

The principal threats include incidental capture in longline fisheries, particularly during foraging trips, as well as climate-driven changes affecting food availability. Because the waved albatross is long-lived and produces few offspring, even small increases in adult mortality have significant population-level impacts. Dependence on a single main breeding site further concentrates risk.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the albatross can be encountered beyond flight or distance.
