Tasmanian Devil | Tasmanischer Teufel | Sarcophilus harrisii

Mo Ganji turns toward the Tasmanian devil — a carnivorous marsupial native to the island of Tasmania — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than ferocity or reputation. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside sound, musculature and narrative so that presence can surface without emphasis. In Ganji’s understanding, the line is not bound to the devil alone; it remains open, reminding us that every figure is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Sarcophilus harrisii is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Once widespread and abundant across Tasmania, the species has suffered severe population declines since the 1990s due to the emergence of devil facial tumour disease (DFTD), a contagious and usually fatal cancer. Although some populations show signs of stabilization, overall numbers remain significantly reduced.

The principal threats include DFTD, habitat fragmentation, vehicle collisions, and localized human disturbance. Because the disease spreads through biting during social interactions, it has reshaped population structure and survival dynamics. Conservation efforts now include disease management, insurance populations, and reintroductions to disease-free areas, including mainland Australia.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the devil can be encountered beyond menace or sound. It allows the being to be perceived as a life shaped by proximity and vulnerability, suggesting how even resilience forged through evolution can be undone when new conditions emerge faster than adaptation can respond.
