Mo Ganji directs his attention toward the regent honeyeater — a medium-sized nectar-feeding bird once widespread in Australia’s open woodlands — by letting the single line search for the bird’s inner alignment rather than its coloration or song. The line gathers the being into a reduced coherence, leaving aside display and movement so that a quieter core can come into view. In Ganji’s understanding, the line is not confined to the honeyeater alone; it remains open, reminding us that each figure is also a human concept momentarily anchored to a living form.

Anthochaera phrygia is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to southeastern Australia, the species has suffered severe declines due to the widespread loss and fragmentation of flowering woodland habitats. Fewer than a few hundred individuals are believed to remain in the wild, scattered across isolated remnants.

The principal threats include habitat destruction, reduced availability of nectar-producing trees, competition with more aggressive honeyeater species, and the effects of climate change on flowering cycles. Because the regent honeyeater depends on large, connected woodland systems to move between seasonal food sources, fragmentation disrupts both feeding and breeding. Intensive conservation programs now involve habitat restoration, captive breeding and release.
