Mo Ganji distills the pygmy hippopotamus — a small, semi-aquatic mammal inhabiting the dense forests and swampy waterways of West Africa — to its essential core through a line that subtracts rather than describes. The continuous line reduces the being to a quiet coherence, allowing presence to emerge without weight, scale or familiarity. In this act of reduction, the line does not insist on the animal alone; it remains open to other readings, acknowledging that every form is also a provisional concept.

Choeropsis liberiensis is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Native primarily to Liberia, with smaller populations in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire, the species occupies fragmented lowland forests and riverine habitats. Population estimates suggest only a few thousand individuals remain in the wild, with numbers continuing to decline.

The principal threats include extensive deforestation, agricultural expansion, mining, and hunting for bushmeat. Because pygmy hippos rely on intact forest cover and access to freshwater, habitat fragmentation severely limits movement and breeding. Civil conflict in parts of their range has further undermined conservation efforts and monitoring.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the hippopotamus can be encountered beyond size or oddity. It allows attention to rest on a life shaped by concealment and withdrawal, suggesting that what persists quietly within shrinking forests often disappears not through confrontation, but through the steady removal of the conditions that once allowed it simply to remain.
