Mo Ganji’s single line engages the New Guinea singing dog — a small, agile canid adapted to rugged highland and montane environments — by allowing its essential coherence to surface without emphasis on vocalisation, mystery or myth. The continuous line gathers a concentrated core of presence, enough to suggest a being while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “dog.” In this exposure of essence, form appears before domestication or wildness defines it.

Canis hallstromi is not formally assessed on the IUCN Red List as a distinct species. It is often regarded as a primitive or feral dog lineage closely related to domestic dogs (Canis familiaris), which are not evaluated under the IUCN framework. However, wild-living populations in the highlands of New Guinea are extremely rare and may persist only in isolated pockets, making their conservation status highly uncertain.

The principal pressures include habitat encroachment, hybridization with domestic dogs, hunting, and the loss of ecological isolation that once allowed the lineage to persist independently. Because of limited confirmed sightings and genetic ambiguity, it remains unclear how many truly wild individuals survive, if any.
