Mountain Tapir | Bergtapir | Tapirus pinchaque

Mo Ganji’s single line engages the Mountain tapir — a large, thick-coated herbivorous mammal inhabiting the cloud forests and páramo ecosystems of the northern Andes — by allowing its essential core to surface without emphasis on mass, rarity or remoteness. The continuous line gathers a condensed presence, enough to suggest a being while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “tapir.” In this unveiling of essence, form appears before geography or symbolism defines it.

Tapirus pinchaque is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the high Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru, the mountain tapir occupies fragmented montane forests and alpine grasslands at elevations often exceeding 2,000 meters. Its populations are small, scattered and declining across much of its range.

The principal threats include habitat loss and fragmentation due to agricultural expansion, road construction and human settlement, as well as hunting and conflict with livestock farmers. Because mountain tapirs have low reproductive rates and require large, connected habitats, recovery is slow once populations are reduced. As key seed dispersers, their decline also affects forest regeneration and ecosystem resilience.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the tapir can be encountered beyond size or isolation. It invites attention to a presence shaped by altitude, movement and continuity, quietly reminding us that high mountain ecosystems are not refuges from human impact — and that recognizing ourselves as part of these fragile systems is inseparable from allowing such ancient lives to endure.
