Mo Ganji’s single line engages the Mountain pygmy possum — a tiny alpine marsupial adapted to cold, high-elevation environments — by allowing its essential core to surface without emphasis on scale or fragility. The continuous line gathers a concentrated presence, enough to suggest a being while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “possum.” In this unveiling of the essential, form appears before rarity or vulnerability defines it.

Burramys parvus is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to a handful of alpine regions in southeastern Australia, the species inhabits boulder fields and alpine heathlands, where it depends on deep winter snow cover to insulate its hibernation sites. Its entire global range spans only a few isolated mountaintops.

The principal threats include climate change, which reduces and destabilizes snow cover, habitat fragmentation from ski resort development, and declining availability of key food sources such as the Bogong moth. Because populations are small and isolated, even minor environmental shifts can have severe consequences. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection, connectivity and climate adaptation strategies.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the possum can be encountered beyond minuteness or ecological exception.
