Mo Ganji’s single line attends to the Indri — a large, tree-dwelling lemur with powerful hind legs and a resonant, far-carrying call — by allowing the core of the being to surface without narrative or ornament. The continuous line holds only what is necessary for presence, leaving form open enough that it could signify more than a single species. In this exposure of the essential, the being appears before name, behaviour or symbolism take hold.

Indri indri is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the eastern rainforests of Madagascar, the indri depends on intact, continuous forest canopies for movement, feeding and social cohesion. Its population has declined sharply as forest habitats have been reduced and fragmented across its limited range.

The principal threats include deforestation driven by slash-and-burn agriculture, illegal logging, and habitat fragmentation that isolates family groups. As indris are highly territorial and have low reproductive rates, population recovery is slow even where pressures are reduced. Hunting, though culturally taboo in some regions, still occurs and adds further strain.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the indri can be encountered beyond sound, rarity or cultural meaning. It invites attention to a presence shaped by forest continuity and collective memory, quietly reminding us that when landscapes fall silent, it is often because humans have mistaken separation for control — forgetting that their own lives remain inseparable from the forests they continue to diminish.
