Mo Ganji’s single line attends to the Hainan gibbon — a small arboreal ape known for its fluid movement and resonant vocalisations in dense tropical forest — through a gesture of radical reduction. The continuous line offers a minimal indication of presence, enough to suggest a living being while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “gibbon.” By setting aside detail, the drawing allows essence to surface before name, role or rarity take hold.

Nomascus hainanus is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to Hainan Island in southern China, the species is confined to a single forest area within Bawangling National Nature Reserve. With fewer than forty individuals surviving, it is considered the world’s rarest primate.

The primary threats include historical deforestation, habitat fragmentation and the long-term isolation of a very small population. Although strict protection has halted hunting and slowed habitat loss, limited genetic diversity and the absence of additional suitable forest severely constrain recovery. Conservation efforts now focus on habitat restoration and careful population management.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the gibbon can be encountered beyond numbers or urgency.
