Bombus franklini is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List and is widely considered possibly extinct. Historically, the species occupied a remarkably small range in southern Oregon and northern California. No confirmed sightings have been recorded since 2006, despite extensive surveys, suggesting a rapid and severe collapse.

Likely causes of decline include habitat loss, the spread of pathogens from managed bees, pesticide exposure, and broader environmental changes affecting flowering plant communities. The bee’s extremely limited distribution left it especially vulnerable to such pressures, allowing little room for resilience or recovery.
