Rhinoderma rufum is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, and it may already be extinct. Endemic to central Chile, the species once inhabited humid forest floors and dense leaf litter. No confirmed sightings have been made since the late 20th century, despite targeted surveys, and habitat within its former range has been heavily altered or destroyed.

Primary threats include extensive deforestation, urban expansion, changes in hydrology, and the spread of infectious diseases such as chytridiomycosis, which has severely impacted amphibian populations globally. With nearly all suitable habitat degraded and no verified recent records, the species persists, if at all, only as a fragment of its former presence.
