Aye-Aye | Fingertier | Daubentonia madagascariensis

Mo Ganji’s single line approaches the aye-aye by seeking a fundamental structure beneath its unusual appearance. The outline does not attempt to capture every striking detail — the oversized ears, the thin probing finger, the nocturnal posture — but instead distills the animal into a reduced, continuous form. In line with Ganji’s philosophy, the essence arises through omission: by leaving out the non-essential, the line opens space for the viewer to sense the creature’s essence, the core of all being.

Daubentonia madagascariensis is a nocturnal lemur found only on Madagascar. Known for its elongated middle finger used to tap and extract insects from wood, it occupies a unique ecological niche among primates. The species is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Its decline is closely tied to widespread deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and hunting. In some regions, traditional beliefs have led to persecution, as aye-ayes are sometimes considered omens of misfortune.

Although the species can adapt to a range of forest types — from primary rainforest to degraded areas — the rapid loss of Madagascar’s forests continues to reduce its viable habitat. Fragmented populations face genetic isolation, and encounters with humans often end fatally for the animal.

Ganji’s quiet, uninterrupted line does not depict these pressures, but it invites attention to the being itself: a rare primate whose survival depends on the protection of Madagascar’s remaining forests. Through reduction, the drawing highlights the enduring presence of a species that stands apart in form and behaviour — and whose continued existence is far from guaranteed.
