Mo Ganji turns toward the Yangtze giant softshell turtle — a large freshwater turtle inhabiting rivers and lakes — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than age, scale or symbolism. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside size, weight and historical projection so that presence can surface without narrative. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the turtle alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Rafetus swinhoei is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List and is considered one of the most endangered vertebrates on Earth. The species was once widespread in the Yangtze River basin of China and parts of northern Vietnam. Today, only a handful of individuals are known to survive, with confirmed animals limited to captive or semi-managed environments after the death of the last known wild female in 2019.

The principal threats include extensive habitat loss, river modification through dam construction, pollution, overharvesting, and egg collection. Because the species requires large, undisturbed freshwater systems and has extremely low reproductive output, recovery is now constrained by both ecological loss and demographic collapse. Conservation efforts focus on assisted breeding and protection of remaining individuals.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the turtle can be encountered beyond longevity or last-of-its-kind narratives. It allows the being to be perceived as a life carried across immense spans of time, suggesting how endurance offers no immunity once the environments that sustained continuity are reduced beyond the point where renewal remains possible.
