Yangtze River Dolphin | Jangtse-Flussdelfin | Lipotes vexillifer

Mo Ganji turns toward the Yangtze River dolphin — a freshwater cetacean once inhabiting the main channel of the Yangtze — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than disappearance or memory. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside motion, proximity and narrative so that presence can surface without depiction. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the dolphin alone; it remains open, reminding us that every form is also a human concept provisionally placed upon a living continuum.

Lipotes vexillifer is listed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the Yangtze River system, the species declined rapidly during the 20th century as industrialization transformed the river. A comprehensive survey in 2006 failed to locate any surviving individuals, and the baiji is now widely recognized as the first cetacean driven to extinction by human activity.

The principal causes of extinction included habitat degradation from dam construction and river engineering, intense vessel traffic, underwater noise, pollution, and bycatch in fishing gear. The cumulative pressure of these factors exceeded the species’ capacity to adapt within a highly modified freshwater system. Efforts to establish ex situ conservation came too late to reverse the collapse.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the dolphin can be encountered beyond loss or commemoration. It allows the being to be perceived as a trace within a shared river history, suggesting how extinction does not end a relationship, but leaves a lasting absence that continues to shape how we understand the systems we still inhabit.
