Mo Ganji’s single line approaches Chapman’s pygmy chameleon — a tiny forest-dwelling reptile with a compact, leaflike profile — as a gesture that seeks the essence beneath appearance. The continuous line offers only the most economical suggestion of form, one that may evoke a chameleon yet resists being confined to that label. Through this deliberate reduction, Ganji invites a first encounter unmediated by concept, where presence precedes interpretation.

Rhampholeon chapmanorum is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to a handful of forest fragments in southern Malawi, the species depends on intact leaf litter and shaded understory to survive. Surveys indicate that its habitat has been drastically reduced, leaving the chameleon confined to extremely small and isolated patches.

Its primary threats include severe deforestation for agriculture and charcoal production, fragmentation of the remaining forest, and the loss of the humid microhabitats essential to its survival. Because the species occupies such a narrow ecological niche, even slight environmental changes can have disproportionate effects. With its forest nearly gone, the chameleon’s future remains perilously uncertain.

Ganji’s line opens a space in which the being may be perceived without the weight of categories or expectations.
