Mo Ganji’s single line approaches the black-faced lion tamarin as an inquiry into essence rather than description. The continuous line sets aside detail and familiar cues, allowing a presence to appear that is not bound to the concept of “tamarin” or even “primate.” Through this reduction, the drawing becomes a gesture toward a being that can be understood before — or beyond — the labels we impose on it.

Leontopithecus caissara is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to a small region along Brazil’s southeastern Atlantic coast, the species occupies lowland and coastal forests, including island habitats. Its total population is extremely small and fragmented, leaving little buffer against environmental change or human pressure.

Major threats include habitat loss from development, agriculture and tourism, as well as isolation of forest fragments that restrict movement and gene flow. Because the tamarin relies on complex forest structure and diverse food resources, even partial degradation of its habitat can undermine survival. Limited population size further heightens vulnerability to stochastic events.
