Mo Ganji engages with the tamaraw — a small, robust wild buffalo endemic to the island of Mindoro — by letting the single line move toward inner essence rather than strength or emblematic status. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside mass, horn shape and symbolism so that presence can emerge without assertion. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the tamaraw alone; it remains open, reminding us that every figure is also a human concept temporarily fixed to a living reality.

Bubalus mindorensis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Restricted to a few isolated areas on Mindoro in the Philippines, the species has suffered drastic population declines over the last century. Current estimates suggest only a few hundred individuals remain, fragmented into small, vulnerable subpopulations.

The principal threats include habitat loss from agricultural expansion, logging and mining, as well as hunting and disease transmission from domestic livestock. Because the tamaraw occupies limited highland grassland and forest-edge habitats, fragmentation severely restricts movement and genetic exchange. Conservation efforts now focus on protected areas, monitoring and reducing human pressure.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the tamaraw can be encountered beyond resilience or rarity.
