Mo Ganji directs his attention to the spider tortoise — a small terrestrial tortoise native to the dry, spiny forests of southern Madagascar — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than pattern or scale. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, setting aside ornament and familiarity so that presence can surface without description. In Ganji’s understanding, the line does not belong to the tortoise alone; it remains open, acknowledging that every figure is also a human concept temporarily placed upon a living reality.

Pyxis arachnoides is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to a narrow coastal strip of southern Madagascar, the species has suffered drastic declines in recent decades. Wild populations are now highly fragmented and continue to decrease rapidly.

The principal threats include illegal collection for the international pet trade, habitat loss from land conversion and charcoal production, and the species’ naturally slow reproductive rate. Because spider tortoises mature late and lay few eggs, population recovery is extremely limited once adults are removed. Even protected areas have struggled to prevent ongoing exploitation.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the tortoise can be encountered beyond geometry or rarity.
