Mo Ganji draws attention to the South China tiger — a forest-dwelling big cat once native to subtropical regions of southern China — by letting the single line move toward essence rather than dominance or legend. The line condenses the being into a reduced coherence, suspending power, myth and visibility so that what remains is a concentrated sense of presence. In Ganji’s understanding, the line is not owned by the tiger alone; it remains open, acknowledging that every figure is also a human concept provisionally attached to something living.

Panthera tigris amoyensis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List and is considered functionally extinct in the wild. No confirmed sightings have been recorded for decades, and the subspecies survives only within captive breeding programs in China. Its disappearance from natural habitats marks one of the most severe collapses of a large predator in modern times.

The principal drivers of decline include extensive habitat destruction, prey depletion, and systematic persecution throughout the 20th century. Fragmentation and human expansion eliminated the ecological conditions necessary for sustaining viable populations. Although rewilding has been discussed, the absence of suitable, connected habitat remains a major obstacle.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the tiger can be encountered beyond presence or absence. It allows attention to rest on a life that now exists largely as memory and managed lineage, suggesting how extinction often unfolds not as a sudden end, but as a gradual withdrawal until what remains can no longer return on its own terms.
