Mo Ganji brings the saiga — a migratory steppe antelope adapted to vast open plains — into a field of reduction where essence precedes anatomy. The single line condenses the being to a concentrated presence, setting aside movement, herd dynamics and recognizability so that a quieter core can surface. In Ganji’s understanding, the line is not owned by the animal it names; it stays open, reminding us that every figure is also a provisional human concept.

Saiga tatarica is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Once numbering in the millions across Eurasian steppes, saiga populations collapsed dramatically in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Although some regional recoveries have occurred, overall numbers remain fragile and unevenly distributed across Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia and Uzbekistan.

The principal threats include poaching for horns driven by demand in traditional medicine, habitat fragmentation from infrastructure and fencing, disease outbreaks, and extreme weather events intensified by climate change. Because saigas rely on long-distance migrations across open landscapes, barriers and disruptions have disproportionate effects on survival and reproduction.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the antelope can be encountered beyond speed or mass movement. It allows attention to rest on a life shaped by openness and continuity, suggesting how beings evolved for expansiveness falter when the world is segmented, and how loss can follow when freedom of movement is treated as expendable.
